Homemade Chinese BBQ Sauce

The strange thing with Chinese BBQ sauces is the fact that some of their key ingredients are sauces in their own right.

Chilli sauce: bright, red, thin and hot. Often used as a dipping suace.

Chilli bean sauce: thick, dark, hot and spicy.

Hoisin sauce: brownish red, thick, sweet and spicy. Sometimes called Chinese BBQ sauce in its own right!

Oyster sauce: thick, brown and with a rich taste.

Soy sauce: a central ingredient in Chinese cooking, salty in flavor. Available as either a light or dark sauce.

Yellow bean sauce: thick, spicy aromatic and with a salty flavor.

Preparation time: 10 minutes
Serves: 6

  • 10 tablespoons of Hoisin sauce
  • 10 tablespoons of tomato ketchup
  • 3 tablespoons of rice wine vinegar
  • 35 tablespoons of light soy sauce
Simply mix all of the ingredients together and chill until required!

No need to cook, so it couldn't be easier.
The classic dish to serve this Chinese barbecue sauce with is ribs. But it also goes really well with chicken, or try it with duck.
