Traeger Texas Pellet Grill Review

It has been said that, “If the Traeger Texas pellet grill, BBQ075, is not big enough, you have too many friends”.

I suppose that comment leads the way into a review of this wood pellet grill. If you’re looking for a barbecue smoker that is large enough to handle a lot of food and cater for a crowd of people then this is a grill that might very well suit your needs. Coupled with that is the well-respected name in the barbecue community that Traeger has for manufacturing top quality and innovative products, this review aims to help you to determine if this is suited to your needs.

One thing to bear in mind is that you can’t really grill as such; the heat source is offset so I would consider this as a smoker not a grill.

646 sq. in. (34” X 19”) Grilling Area

The cooking area of this Traeger Texas is a huge 646 square inches, 34 inches x 19”, that’s a grilling grid just under a yard in length. There’s more than enough room on this barbecue to cater for your family and friends.

Auto Feed Pellet Delivery System

The Texas Pellet grill has a side mounted hopper which you put the pellets in and these are automatically fed to the burner at the rate that you set. This means that you can start-up and leave your food cooking with the knowledge that it won’t burn.

The big thing about smokers is that the cooking is done “low and slow” and with a full hopper and at this setting this Traeger smoker can run for 12 hours without the need to refill the hopper.

Three Temperature Settings

The Traeger Texas Pellet Grill has three temperature settings (unless you buy the digital thermostat control):

  • Low for smoking.
  • Medium for slow cooking
  • High for grilling (but see note above)

Customer Reviews and Scores

Checking out the reviews of this the Traeger Texas Pellet Grill on Amazon, at the time of writing, indicates an average score of 3 out of 5 stars with about 50% of buyers liking this item and 50% not so impressed.

From reading many of the reviews, good and bad, it appears that the quality of taste that you can achieve is not in question but the build quality is.  It looks like those that have not had any mechanical problems really like the grill and would recommend it to others and many of these people have had the grill for years.

In opposition is the fact that a good many people have had problems from the start with build quality and the claim that it is difficult to maintain a steady temperature with the grill.

Some buyers comments…

I love this grill!

Great grill for a mechanic.

Best purchase I have made.

Piece of crap.

Conclusion - Traeger Texas Pellet Grill

As mentioned above this Traeger Texas is really a smoker as in my opinion you need some sort of direct heat under the food, even if it’s indirect heat; as I said though, just my opinion.

This Traeger smoker grill is the smallest in the Traeger line-up and so probably should be considered as an entry into the world of pellet grills. All things considered I think that if you receive a grill that arrives in good condition, you’re probably going to be happy with it. That said do you want to take the chance and are you prepared to go through the process of getting it exchanged? This I suppose where buying from Amazon is a positive, as you just return it to them.
