Weber Smokey Mountain 22 inch Charcoal Smoker 731001 Review

Essentially the Weber Smokey Mountain 22 inch charcoal smoker is the bigger brother of the original, best-selling, 18 inch Smokey Mountain. Compared to the 18 inch it’s bigger in size, has a larger cooking area and with that comes a bigger price tag.

While looking for a new charcoal smoker I had to consider the 18 inch Smokey Mountain but while I was researching that I was automatically drawn to the 22 inch and I had to check it out and at least consider it.

I’ve done a lot of research on the Weber Smokey Mountain range of vertical smokers and would like to share my findings with you.

Cooking Area Measuring 726 Square Inch

This Weber Smokey Mountain 22 inch smoker has two heavy duty nickel plated cooking grids, each one measuring 22.5 inches in diameter and giving a total cooking area of 726 square inches which for a vertical smoker is, from my findings, the largest available.

To give an idea of the amount of food that you can cook in the smoker, Weber state 29 hamburger patties, this compares to 19 that can be cooked on the 18 inch model. To put this into perspective you can cook twelve racks of ribs in one go.

Thermometer Fitted As Standard

I’ve owned other smokers in the past that did not have a built in thermometer and I found it extremely difficult to gauge the internal cooking temperature when using them. In fact a friend of mine owns an older Weber Smokey Mountain and his only gripe is that it doesn’t have a thermometer fitted.

The current range of Smokey Mountains all have a durable thermometer built into the lid and while reading the buyer reviews many have said that temperature control is both accurate and easy.

Customer Reviews and Scores

When I first began researching the Weber Smokey Mountain 22 inch smoker I actually looked at the 18 inch charcoal smoker first, which I already knew about. This led my on to researching this, the 22 inch version and it’s basically the same smoker but a lot bigger in terms of cooking area.

On Amazon, at the time of writing, I found 446 customer reviews for this smoker giving it an average score of 4.9 out of 5 stars, which is an even higher score than the 18 inch version..

Out of those 446 reviews a massive 395 buyers give it a full 5 stars. Only 7 people scored it at 3 stars or less.

Of the few people that scored it 3 stars or less it appears that some parts where either missing or damaged. Personally, although I know that this can be annoying, this sort of thing happens and I tend to disregard these reviews.

A common theme with all of the Weber Smokey Mountain range is that the access door is flimsy when taking into consideration the build quality of the smoker as a whole. However this appears to be more of a minor niggle than any great concern. From my experience of bullet type smokers all of them have had what I would call a flimsy access door but it’s nothing that I couldn’t live with. It appears that this is typical for this type of smoker.

Conclusion – The Weber Smokey Mountain 22 Inch Charcoal Smoker

If you are looking for a bullet type, vertical smoker there are only two things that you need to consider when deciding whether to buy this smoker or not.

The first is the price, this Weber smoker is not very cheap and there are much cheaper vertical smokers on the market. The fact is though that even at the price that this Weber sells at it still gets 5 out of 5 from the vast number of buyers. To me that indicates that the smoker is not only very capable but is actually value for money.

The second consideration is the size of the smoker. Most people that reviewed this find the amount of food that can be cooked in this smoker to be one of its best features and specifically bought it for that reason. I would generally always recommend that you get bigger than you think you need. I’ve bought grills and smokers in the past and wished that I bought larger, so it’s cheaper to buy the larger item in the first place. However, if you think that it is too large for your needs you could get either the smaller 14 inch or 18 inch smoker from the same Smokey Mountain range.

The bottom line then, is this smoker recommended?

Based on my research and the overwhelmingly positive buyer reviews I cannot recommend the Weber Smokey Mountain 22 inch charcoal smoker more highly.
